Guardia Civil fraud investigations in Spain

Overview

The Guardia Civil has conducted investigations into various fraudulent schemes targeting victims in Spain.

In one instance, authorities resolved two cases of Business Email Compromise (BEC) in Pinto and Valencia. In these cases, perpetrators gained unauthorized access to computer systems to monitor commercial operations and sent deceptive emails requesting changes to bank details for outstanding invoices. The total loss for the two affected companies was 12,000 euros.

In a separate investigation known as ‘Operation Baloni’, the Guardia Civil targeted a criminal network involved in online football ticket fraud. The group allegedly used online classified platforms to post fake advertisements, instructing victims to make payments via immediate transfer apps to evade financial tracking.

Recent developments in ‘Operation Baloni’ have led to the investigation of eight individuals residing in Bizkaia and Cantabria. These individuals face allegations including continuous fraud, money laundering, and membership in a criminal group. The investigation, which involved months of analyzing communications and bank movements, has identified at least 16 victims across several provinces, including Almería, Madrid, Toledo, and Bizkaia, with estimated total damages of approximately 8,200 euros. Authorities have advised the public to use only official sales channels and to remain wary of offers with prices significantly lower than usual.
