Guardia Civil investigations and legal proceedings

Overview

The Guardia Civil continues to manage various legal matters and criminal investigations across Spain. In Granada, prosecutors have requested to archive a case against four officers whose patrol vehicles were recorded speeding while responding to a robbery, an incident the Unified Association of Guardia Civil Officers (AUGC) stated caused “professional and personal difficulties” for the officers. In a separate matter, a member of the Organización Juvenil Socialista (OJS) was detained following an anti-fascist graffiti incident. During the investigation, authorities searched the individual’s home and seized various materials, an action described by the individual’s lawyer as “completely disproportionate.”

Criminal investigations into fraud and robbery have yielded several recent arrests. In Valencia, a 52-year-old man was detained for allegedly committing ten robberies at gas stations in the l’Horta Nord region. In Loja, Granada, a 21-year-old man was arrested for a series of property crimes, including six commercial thefts and two robberies involving violence and intimidation. Other ongoing legal matters include a man in Granada facing trial for allegedly defrauding investors of more than 300,000 euros, and a 73-year-old in Albacete under investigation for a “recovery room” scam.

Recent major operations have targeted organized crime. Through ‘Operación Bonifaz’ in Seville, the Guardia Civil dismantled a human trafficking network, resulting in 19 arrests and the liberation of 22 foreign women. This network, which had links to provinces such as Pontevedra, recruited victims from Latin American countries with false promises of employment as caregivers. Once in Spain, the organization used debt bondage, passport seizure, and threats against families to coerce women into prostitution at various brothels.
