Guatemala social protection initiatives
Overview
In Guatemala, the Procuraduría General de la Nación (PGN) has expanded its focus on social protection. Initially, the PGN signed a cooperation agreement with six state agencies to coordinate comprehensive care for minors whose human rights have been threatened or violated, particularly those in situations of human mobility. This pact aims to unify state capacities to provide access to health, education, security, and social programs.
Subsequently, the PGN has also addressed the vulnerability of older adults. The agency is responding to reports of rights violations involving seniors facing abandonment and social isolation by verifying living conditions and attempting to engage family networks to fulfill legal protection responsibilities. When assistance is accepted, the PGN manages health services, family contact, or shelter placement.
