Overview

In late July 2026 Guayaquil expanded its city‑wide security program. On 21 July the acting mayor inaugurated a new Secure Action Station on the Cerro del Carmen hill, adding to an existing network of 13 stations. The facility includes 67 cameras, rapid‑response vehicles and municipal agents, aiming to protect thousands of residents and daily visitors in the historic centre.

A few days later, the municipality approved an ordinance allowing gated “rejas” in neighborhoods once 70 % of residents approve. In the northern Urdenor 1 district, residents organized the installation after a series of vehicle thefts and an armed assault, reporting a sharp drop in robberies and stronger neighbourly ties. The deadline for legalising additional gates is set for 31 July 2026.
