Guwahati hotel shooting investigation

Overview

On October 26, 2026, a shooting occurred at Hotel Bilas Inn in the Bora Service area of Guwahati, Assam, resulting in five deaths. The victims were identified as hotel owner Helena Bharali, her brother Bhudev Bharali, her son Devarshi Kashyap, her daughter-in-law Rinika Kashyap, and staffer Narayan Das. One survivor, caretaker Satyendra Pathak, was reported to be in stable condition.

Guwahati Police identified the accused as leaseholder Ghanakanta Gogoi, who was arrested shortly after the incident. Preliminary investigations suggest the attack was triggered by a property dispute regarding the hotel lease. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) was formed to lead the probe, and the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court directed police to ensure the safety of the accused.

By October 30, the wife of the prime accused, Junmoni Gogoi, surrendered to the Dhemaji Sadar Police Station. While Ghanakanta Gogoi has maintained he acted in self-defence, investigators are questioning him regarding the whereabouts of a licensed pistol. Police are expected to transport Junmoni Gogoi for further interrogation to determine if she has information regarding the weapon.
