Guyana National Bureau of Standards development
Overview
The Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) has undergone significant technical and operational expansion. Following the completion of a $17 million National Quality Infrastructure project supported by the Inter-American Development Bank, the bureau has enhanced its testing, measurement, and certification capabilities. This initiative addressed gaps in laboratory facilities, including new spaces for calibrating weights, volumes, thermometers, time, and frequency, as well as improved inspection capacity for high-capacity scales.
Building on these technical improvements, the GNBS is now focusing on industry-specific quality and safety standards. In the food service sector, the bureau is collaborating with the Catering and Restaurant Association of Guyana to implement training and develop new standards. Additionally, the GNBS is promoting the GCP 18 National Standard, a Code of Practice for tour operators and guides, to regulate professional conduct, insurance, and emergency safety protocols within the tourism industry.
