Guyana technical education modernization initiative
Overview
The Guyanese Ministry of Education has launched an $85 million initiative to modernize Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) by establishing specialized computer-aided design (CAD) laboratories in secondary schools.
Initially, the project focused on commissioning AutoCAD laboratories at several locations, including Hope Secondary School, North Ruimveldt Multilateral Secondary School, and New Amsterdam Secondary School. These facilities were designed to equip students with digital design skills necessary for sectors such as engineering, architecture, construction, and oil and gas.
Following the initial rollout, the first phase of the initiative was completed, outfitting six secondary schools nationwide. The upgraded laboratories feature air-conditioned spaces, high-powered laptops, and AutoCAD software. Education Minister Sonia Parag noted that the investment provides tools comparable to international standards, while Deputy Chief Education Officer Dr. Ritesh Tularam highlighted the ability for students to transform digital designs into physical products.
