Guyana youth sports achievements and development

Overview

Guyana has seen recent success and structural investment in youth sports, particularly in boxing and football.

In regional competitions, Guyanese athletes achieved high rankings in the Caribbean Schoolboys and Juniors Boxing Championships, finishing at the top of the medal table with eight gold and two silver medals. In football, the National Under-14 Boys’ team secured the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Under-14 Challenge Series Tier II title after a victory against Suriname.

To build on such performance, the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) is implementing long-term development initiatives. These include professionalizing the sport through coaching education, with eight coaches recently earning CONCACAF C Licenses, and the Youth Ensemble Programme. Conducted in collaboration with FIFA, this programme involves an annual investment of GYD$44 million to provide structured competition for over 2,000 players across various age categories.
