Haiti educational support and security initiative
Overview
The Haitian government has launched a support initiative for the 2026-2027 school year to address economic instability and insecurity. Initially, the ‘Cash Transfert-Éducation’ program was announced to provide 15,000 gourdes to 140,000 parents in disadvantaged areas. This process utilizes the Education Information and Management System (SIGE) to automate beneficiary identification through the Economic and Social Assistance Fund (FAES).
As the school year approaches, the government expanded its support package to include 160,000 families, comprising 130,000 parents and 30,000 vulnerable households. Beyond financial aid, the plan includes distributing 8,000 pieces of school furniture, reinforcing canteen programs, and rehabilitating 52 national schools and high schools. To ensure safety, the National Police of Haiti plans to deploy 10,750 officers to secure educational facilities and the broader school community.
Following these preparations, the school year officially launched in the Artibonite department. Minister Sandra Paulemon stated that reopening classes serves as a way to “reaffirm state presence,” particularly in rural areas. To further assist families, the government has announced additional measures, including textbook subsidies and the expansion of school canteen programs.
