Hakkari beekeeping protection project
Overview
Local authorities in the Yüksekova district of Hakkari, Turkey, have launched the ‘Tel Çektim Arılarım Güvende’ (I Drew Wire, My Bees are Safe) project to protect beehives from wild animals. Funded by the Turkish Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, the initiative provides subsidized electric fencing kits to eligible beekeepers.
Beneficiaries, selected through a lottery system, must own at least 50 beehives. The comprehensive kits include solar panels, electric fence devices, wiring, and grounding equipment. Hakkari Governor İbrahim Taşyapan noted that the project aims to protect producers’ labor and ensure honey maintains a fair market value, highlighting that the region produces roughly 1,200 tons of honey annually from 160,000 hives.
