Hamburg circus animal welfare protests and political fallout

A protest against Circus Krone in Hamburg’s St. Pauli district escalated into a physical confrontation when animal rights activists climbed the circus tent at Heiligengeistfeld. Police reported that three activists were removed by circus employees, leading to mutual charges of bodily harm and trespassing. While the animal welfare organization Vier Pfoten characterized the action as a peaceful attempt to unfurl a banner and alleged activists were injured by staff, Circus Krone denied these claims, stating employees did not cause physical harm and that the activists created a “highly dangerous situation.”

Following these demonstrations, the situation transitioned into a political matter. The political party Die Linke submitted a motion to the Hamburg Bürgerschaft to prevent the city from renting municipal spaces to circuses that feature wild animal performances. Additionally, a public petition has been launched to ensure the Heiligengeistfeld is only used by circuses that do not include animal training, as critics argue the city government continues to facilitate such shows despite expressing opposition to the use of wild animals.
