Hanoi waste management and environmental mitigation

Hanoi authorities are addressing significant waste accumulation and environmental concerns through large-scale management proposals and localized cleanup efforts.

In response to environmental and economic impacts at the Xuan Son Solid Waste Treatment Area, the Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has proposed a 2,226 billion VND project. The plan aims to process 3.7 million tons of accumulated waste using a waste-to-energy plant, metal recycling, and regulated hazardous waste management. This proposed Public-Private Partnership would involve renovating the site and developing green parks on reclaimed land to mitigate issues such as odors affecting local tourism and potential soil and water contamination.

Separately, in the Tu Liem Ward, authorities have begun clearing approximately 300 tons of accumulated clothing waste from a project site at the intersection of Pham Hung and Le Duc Tho streets. The textiles, which had been accumulating since April 2025, caused mold and foul odors. Workers from the Hanoi Urban Environment Company are transporting the waste to the Nam Son Waste Treatment Plant, with officials planning to coordinate with police to prevent further illegal dumping at the site.
