Hanur forest encounter controversy

A controversy has emerged following a forest encounter in Hanur taluk, Chamarajanagar district, which resulted in the deaths of three individuals identified as Anthony Swamy, John Rose Peter, and Sebastian David Kumar.

Political leaders in Karnataka have raised significant concerns regarding the transparency of the incident. B. Y. Vijayendra, Karnataka BJP President, has alleged a government cover-up, claiming the deceased had no criminal backgrounds. He has questioned the lack of public access to post-mortem reports and cited ballistic expert opinions suggesting the victims were shot from close range. Vijayendra also called for information regarding a fourth individual present during the encounter who reportedly escaped.

Adding to the tension, Karnataka BJP Leader of the Opposition R. Ashok criticized a resolution passed by the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly concerning the deaths of the alleged poachers. Ashok argued the matter should be handled within Karnataka and expressed concern over reports that the Tamil Nadu government intends to provide compensation to the families of the deceased, noting they were Karnataka voters. He warned against the incident becoming a linguistic dispute between the two states and called for a comprehensive investigation into the conduct of the Karnataka Forest Department.
