Hate crime investigation against Indian citizens in Nitra

Following an August 1 attack on Indian nationals in Nitra, Slovak authorities have progressed through several stages of a hate crime investigation. The incident involved a group of masked individuals attacking four victims near the Nitra River, resulting in at least one hospitalization.

Initial police investigations, part of an operation named ‘Predsudok’, led to the detention of four minors. While three suspects were released, investigators sought detention for a 17-year-old suspect accused of bodily harm motivated by racial or national hatred, rioting, and expressing sympathy for a movement aimed at suppressing fundamental rights and freedoms. The teenager reportedly used paving stones to form a swastika during the incident.

A Specialized Criminal Court in Banská Bystrica recently ruled on the teenager's status. Although the defendant pleaded guilty and expressed regret, the judge denied the prosecution's request for detention, citing the defendant's age and lack of a prior criminal record. The court instead imposed specific restrictions and mandated supervision by a probation and mediation officer. Other suspects involved in the attack remain at liberty.
