Haze and forest fire response in Indonesia
Overview
Forest and land fires have caused haze and degraded air quality in parts of Indonesia, prompting various humanitarian and protective responses.
In Medan, Forum Zakat (FOZ) Sumatera Utara launched a campaign to distribute one million free masks to road users to mitigate exposure to smoke. FOZ Sumut Chairman Sulaiman described the initiative as a response to the “social and humanitarian issues caused by the haze.”
In Pasaman Barat, local authorities, including the police and the Regent, distributed hundreds of medical masks to students and staff at SMAN 1 Pasaman. This measure aims to prevent Acute Respiratory Infections (ISPA) caused by microscopic smoke particles, while officials provided education on the dangers of smoke inhalation.
