Haze impact on Singapore running event
Overview
On September 27, organizers of the inaugural Kiprun Singapore race shortened the half-marathon distance from 21.1km to 10km due to worsening haze.
The decision followed an air quality review at 2am after the 24-hour Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) exceeded safety thresholds. Central Singapore recorded a PSI of 126, while readings in the east and west were 109 and 104, respectively; a PSI between 101 and 200 is classified as unhealthy.
All race categories were declared non-competitive, meaning no official rankings or results would be issued, and the planned awards ceremony was cancelled. The 10km, 5km, and 670m Kids Dash categories maintained their original distances and start times. MetaSport stated these modifications were intended to protect participant health and safety by reducing prolonged physical exertion.
