HBO docuseries release of JAY-Z IN 8

Overview

HBO has released ‘JAY-Z IN 8’, an eight-part docuseries directed by Rick Rubin that explores the musical career and creative processes of rapper JAY-Z. The series, which features executive producers Daniel Kaluuya, Rubin, and JAY-Z, arrives during a milestone period marking the 30th anniversary of ‘Reasonable Doubt’ and the 25th anniversary of ‘The Blueprint’.

Filmed over two days in Paris, the series departs from a traditional chronological biography, instead using specific themes and selected songs to structure each episode. The project revisits iconic tracks and collaborations, including works from ‘The Dynasty: Roc La Familia’, ‘The Blueprint 2’, and ‘The Black Album’. The series is scheduled to conclude on October 9.

In the sixth episode, JAY-Z discusses his former collaborator Ye, describing him as ‘one of the most brilliant creatives we’re ever going to see’. While reviewing the track ‘Jail’ from the album ‘Donda’, director Rick Rubin compares the isolation Ye experienced following his turn toward extremism to a sense of confinement. JAY-Z reflected on their personal bond, noting that despite their complicated relationship and changing paths, Ye has maintained a sense of reverence for him as a big brother.
