Health alerts over unregulated pharmaceutical products
Overview
Health authorities in the Americas are issuing warnings regarding the sale of unregulated supplements and unauthorized pharmaceutical products containing undeclared active ingredients.
In the United States and Mexico, regulators have identified sexual performance supplements marketed as natural that contain undisclosed drugs such as sildenafil, tadalafil, paroxetine, and vardenafil. The FDA specifically noted brands like HARD AF! and MAGNUM, the latter of which contained a honey-based product with undisclosed medications.
In Chile, the National Customs Service and the Public Health Institute (ISP) seized various sexual enhancers—including honeys, syrups, and gummies—that were found to contain tadalafil and sildenafil at concentrations comparable to prescription medications. Authorities warned that these products pose risks to those with cardiovascular conditions.
Recent alerts have expanded to include unauthorized weight loss and diabetes treatments. In Argentina, the National Administration of Drugs, Food and Medical Technology (ANMAT) has issued specific alerts regarding the clandestine marketing of Retatrutide via e-commerce, social media, and WhatsApp. Because the substance is still in clinical research stages and lacks regulatory approval from ANMAT, the US FDA, or Brazil’s Anvisa, authorities warned that these injectables pose “extreme risks of infection or death” due to microbiological contamination, incorrect dosages, or unverified composition.
Reports of adverse effects have emerged, including an incident where influencer Sofía Gonet required urgent medical attention following the use of the illicit injectable. In response, security forces in the Triple Frontier region have seized illegal shipments of the product. Additionally, Panama’s Ministry of Health (Minsa) continues to monitor for unauthorized Tirzepatide and counterfeit Mounjaro devices.
