Healthcare access barriers in Denmark

Surveys in Denmark have identified significant barriers to accessing healthcare services. A YouGov study for Gjensidige found that 40% of Danes have avoided medical attention over the last five years despite feeling a need. Nearly half of these individuals cited uncertainty regarding whether their symptoms were serious enough to warrant a visit. Other contributing factors include long waiting times, a lack of trust in physicians, and individuals deciding a visit was unnecessary.

Economic factors also impact access, particularly regarding dental care. In the Zealand Region, 44.4% of citizens reported avoiding necessary dental treatment due to financial constraints, even when experiencing pain or cavities. Data shows that 10.4% of residents in that region have borrowed money for dental expenses in the last five years, with those aged 16 to 34 being the most likely to borrow funds for such procedures.

In response to the findings on symptom uncertainty, health specialist Mette Glad advised that individuals should not attempt to self-diagnose or determine severity before seeking help, noting that professional assessment is preferable if symptoms persist or cause worry.
