Healthcare and emergency response in Kosovo
Overview
In Kosovo, an internal audit at the University Clinical Center of Kosovo (QKUK) identified significant mismanagement in the planning, procurement, and monitoring of medical supplies. This led to shortages of essential items, including oncology medications, stents, and surgical pens. Health Minister Arben Vitia has called for disciplinary measures to address these systemic deficiencies.
Following these challenges, the Kosovo Police Special Units have focused on enhancing field medical capabilities. Eighteen operators completed a one-year training program, ‘Advancement of basic knowledge in emergency medicine’, conducted in collaboration with the University Clinical Center of Kosovo (ShSKUK). The initiative aims to improve first aid response and operational readiness through inter-institutional cooperation between police and medical professionals.
