Healthcare and infrastructure development in India

Overview

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has overseen the expansion of healthcare and educational infrastructure through several major inaugurations.

In late September 2026, the 750-bed Baba Baidyanath Medical Trust Hospital was inaugurated in Deoghar, Jharkhand. This facility is a joint initiative between the Baba Baidyanath Medical Trust and the P. D. Hinduja Hospital and Medical Research Centre. The project aims to establish the region as a center for medical tourism while providing advanced services to middle-income and economically weaker populations.

Following this, in early October 2026, the Chief Minister inaugurated the Bongaigaon Medical College and Hospital as part of a Rs 711-crore regional development package. This project, costing approximately Rs 611 crore, is intended to expand medical education and specialized healthcare access to reduce reliance on urban centers like Guwahati. The development also included the opening of a new Integrated District Commissioner’s Office and the laying of foundation stones for various educational projects in Abhayapuri and Tulungia.
