Healthcare professional roles and training in Italy
Overview
The Italian healthcare system is supported by approximately 1.5 million professionals across 31 recognized roles that require mandatory registration with professional orders. These roles are organized into macro-areas including nursing and midwifery, rehabilitation, technical-health, and technical prevention, alongside socio-health support roles such as the Operatore Socio-Sanitario (OSS), which requires specific training rather than a university degree.
To support these professionals, various educational and training initiatives are being implemented across the country. In Florence, Pistoia, and Piacenza, accredited continuing education programs scheduled for October include Basic Life Support training based on 2025 American Heart Association guidelines, emotional trauma management through ‘defusing’ sessions, and specialized treatment for venous ulcers. Additionally, smoking cessation programs utilizing cognitive-behavioral approaches are being conducted in Piacenza.
New training initiatives have been announced for November. In Chiavari, Asl 4 and the Fondazione Gigi Ghirotti Genova ETS will launch a palliative care volunteer course on November 2 to support hospice and home-based patients. In Pistoia, the Fondazione Turati di Gavinana, in collaboration with the Interprovincial Order of Nursing Professions of Florence and Pistoia, will host a multidisciplinary course on November 27 regarding the legal, ethical, and operational aspects of physical restraint in healthcare settings.
