Healthcare support in remote Greek regions
Overview
Healthcare accessibility in remote and island regions of Greece is being supported through various volunteer and specialized medical initiatives.
In August 2026, the ‘Medical Landing’ program, organized by the Scientific Society of Greek Medical Students (EEFIE), deployed approximately 195 medical students to 70 health units. This 30-year-old initiative aims to address increased summer medical demands in tourist hubs and remote areas like Mykonos, Paros, Corfu, and Chios, providing students with clinical experience in rural settings.
Following this, the ‘Renaissance and Progress’ initiative, funded by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, scheduled Mobile Medical Units (KIM) to provide free healthcare services to the residents of Sikinos in September 2026. This mission, overseen by the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, offers a wide range of specialist consultations and diagnostic services, including cardiology, orthopedics, and various screenings.
