Heat mitigation efforts in Hermosillo

Overview

In response to extreme temperatures, hydration initiatives have been implemented in Hermosillo, Mexico. The University of Sonora began installing free hydration modules on its Hermosillo campus on 10 August to provide water, oral rehydration solutions, and health advice to students to prevent heat-stroke.

Following this, municipal authorities expanded efforts by launching hydration brigades. With thermal sensations reaching up to 51 degrees Celsius, the municipal government and the Secretariat of Health have distributed water, rehydration salts, and electrolyte drinks at public spaces, bus stops, and near the university. Health officials are advising citizens to seek shelter during peak heat hours and maintain hydration to mitigate desert climate risks.
