Heat waves in the Mid-South United States
Overview
In late September, Middle Tennessee experienced a heat wave with temperatures in the upper 90s and heat index values exceeding 100 degrees. A cooling trend was expected to bring afternoon highs into the lower 80s by mid-week.
By October, unseasonably high temperatures affected the Mid-South and central United States. In the Memphis area and DeSoto County, highs reached the low 90s, approximately 15 degrees above the seasonal average. These temperatures approached or threatened to exceed historical daily records. A cold front was forecasted to arrive by the end of the week to restore typical fall temperatures.
