Heavy rainfall and flooding in Venezuela
Overview
Heavy rainfall and strong winds caused widespread disruption in Venezuela during early October. In Caracas and Miranda, intense storms led to significant flooding, rising river levels, and landslides. Emergency services responded to incidents such as fallen trees and landslides in Petare, while a structural fire in Caracas necessitated the evacuation of approximately 300 people.
In Aragua state, landslides caused closures on the Maracay-Choroní highway. Authorities noted that recent seismic activity has increased terrain vulnerability in the Henri Pittier National Park area.
By late October, intense rainfall in the state of Mérida caused the collapse of access routes in the Libertador municipality. The overflow of a stream in the El Rincón sector flooded public roads and blocked transit for residents and cargo vehicles due to sediment and rock accumulation. Local communities have requested heavy machinery to clear debris and restore connectivity. The National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology has forecasted continued rain and electrical discharges across various Venezuelan regions, including the Andes, Zulia, the Llanos, Bolívar, and Amazonas.
