Hellenic Train modernization of Greek railways

Overview

Hellenic Train is undergoing a multi-faceted modernization of the Greek railway network, involving both digital infrastructure and fleet upgrades.

In early September 2026, the company completed the first phase of the ‘Digital Transformation of OSE’ project. Funded by the ‘Greece 2.0’ National Recovery and Resilience Plan via European Union NextGenerationEU resources, this phase included the installation of new infrastructure at 30 stations and the development of central digital applications, such as a new ticketing management system and passenger information systems.

Following this digital milestone, Hellenic Train announced a €308 million self-funded investment to modernize its rolling stock. The company signed a contract with Alstom for 23 new Coradia Stream electric trains, including 12 intercity models for the Athens-Thessaloniki axis and 11 suburban trains. Deliveries are expected to begin in the second quarter of 2027. The fleet expansion also includes the introduction of two Hitachi Blues hybrid trains.
