Hellenic Train safety and regulatory issues

In August 2026, Hellenic Train faced regulatory and operational challenges in Greece. The Regulatory Authority for Railways (RAS) imposed a 120,000 euro fine on the company due to maintenance violations. The investigation revealed a lack of traceability regarding fire-retardant certifications for passenger seat materials used between 2021 and 2023. RAS noted that the company failed to verify which carriages received specific materials and emphasized that outsourcing maintenance does not absolve the company of safety responsibilities.

On August 27, 2026, a fatal incident occurred on the Thessaloniki–Larissa route. At approximately 09:12, a man was killed after being struck by Hellenic Train suburban service 1593 near the Kouloiou intersection, just before reaching Larissa Station.

Hellenic Train reported that the driver, who was transporting 68 passengers, spotted the individual on the tracks and immediately activated the automatic braking system and audible warning signals, but the collision could not be avoided. Emergency services, including the Fire Service, Police, and EKAB, responded to the scene. The incident resulted in the train being immobilized, the transfer of passengers to Larissa via bus, and significant delays on the line. Authorities are investigating the circumstances, with some reports suggesting the possibility of suicide, noting that the individual may have been waiting on the tracks. Hellenic Train has expressed its condolences and is cooperating with authorities.
