Hepatitis A outbreaks expand in Romania
Overview
Hepatitis A outbreaks have been identified in multiple regions of Romania. In Alba County, the Public Health Directorate confirmed 23 cases across two active outbreaks in the municipality of Alba Iulia and the locality of Valea Lungă. In Alba Iulia’s Lumea Nouă neighborhood, a community outbreak resulted in 18 cases, while Valea Lungă reported five. These cases primarily affect children and young adults.
In Brașov County, outbreaks have been concentrated in the municipality of Săcele, several communes including Tărlungeni, Zizin, Arini, Apața, and Prejmer, and the city of Brașov. While 85 cases were initially recorded, primarily in children aged 1 to 9, recent data indicates 283 cases were identified in the third quarter. Brașov is managing eight active outbreaks, with 42 patients currently receiving care at the Brașov Infectious Diseases Hospital. To prevent overcrowding, officials are considering transferring patients to medical units in Brașov or Covasna counties.
In Constanța County, the Public Health Directorate has reported 130 cases across 23 active outbreaks. The number of outbreaks increased sevenfold within a single month from three initial family-related clusters in the Hârșova area. These include 15 familial, five community-based, and three outbreaks involving collective environments.
Health authorities have distributed disinfectants, antiseptics, and vaccines to family physicians to immunize contacts. However, Dr. Claudia Cambrea, manager of the Constanța Infectious Diseases Hospital, has emphasized the importance of rigorous hygiene. While vaccination is recommended, it is not currently in the National Vaccination Calendar, and no funds are presently available for free vaccinations in Constanța.
