High-value agricultural production in Turkey
Overview
Turkey is experiencing a shift toward high-value agricultural products, supported by government initiatives and technological integration. In regions such as Hakkari, Karabük, and Konya, farmers are increasingly focusing on saffron cultivation through various methods, including the use of smart sensors, data analytics, and soil-less farming to manage irrigation and fertilization.
Saffron production is expanding geographically. In Hakkari's Yüksekova district, Kerim Erişmiş expanded his production to 2 decares with support from the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. In Giresun's Alucra district, Dursun Kılıçkaya has successfully cultivated saffron at an altitude of 1,500 meters after five years of trials. Additionally, Ahmet Yiğit Kazanç in Nevşehir's Avanos district recently harvested a 60-decare field, noted as Turkey's largest single-deed saffron production area.
Individual farmers report that saffron remains a highly labor-intensive process. Ali Gök, who expanded his production to a two-decare plot, noted that the process requires approximately 45 days of daily flower collection, often continuing late into the night. Recent rainfall has contributed to high-quality, early flowering. The economic value of the crop is significant, with market prices reported as high as 900,000 to 1 million TL per kilogram.
Other regional developments include the production of Afşin Koçovası garlic in Kahramanmaraş, raspberry cultivation in Adana, and expanded beekeeping efforts in Sinop supported by the Rural Disadvantaged Areas Development Project (KDAKP).
