High-value wine thefts at Italian wineries
Overview
A series of professional thefts targeting high-value Italian wineries has been reported. In late September, over 3,000 bottles of Barolo wine from the Conterno e Fantino winery in Piedmont were stolen. The operation involved four masked individuals who used the facility’s own forklifts to load the 2021 and 2022 vintages into vans.
In early October, a significantly larger heist occurred at the Marchesi Antinori winery in Cortona, Tuscany. Approximately 30,000 bottles of prestigious labels, including Tignanello, Guado al Tasso, and the 2023 vintage of Solaia, were stolen in an operation valued at an estimated 5 million to 8.2 million euros. The theft of 10,000 bottles of Solaia represents a significant portion of that year’s total production.
Investigators report that at least seven masked individuals disabled the alarm system and surveillance cameras before using company forklifts to load the goods onto two large trucks. The theft was discovered on a Monday morning. Authorities noted that the specific selection of bottles suggests the gang may have had inside knowledge or was working to order. CEO Renzo Cotarella described the incident as the largest wine theft of its kind ever recorded in Italy, characterizing the perpetrators as a “very well-prepared gang.”
Recent details indicate the stolen bottles have retail values ranging from €150 to €500 each. While the company’s insurance policy is expected to cover approximately 10% of the losses, Marchesi Antinori has issued a global warning to international clients and distributors to remain vigilant regarding unofficial offers. Police and Carabinieri are currently investigating, utilizing surveillance footage from Tuscan roads to track the movement of the trucks used in the heist.
