Higher education initiatives in Guayaquil
Overview
Higher education in Guayaquil is being addressed through career guidance initiatives, scholarship programs, and academic partnerships with local government.
To assist high school graduates facing economic and vocational challenges, the ‘Todos Juntos por la Educación’ initiative is organizing a free event at Plaza Viva Guayarte on October 14 and 15. The event aims to connect students with universities and institutes to facilitate informed decision-making. This initiative addresses concerns regarding costs, admission processes, and job market opportunities, noting a strong correlation between education levels and income quintiles in Ecuador.
Furthering access to education, the Municipal Public Company for Social Action and Education (DASE EP) and Tecnológico Universitario Espíritu Santo (TES) have launched a call for 1,960 full scholarships. Designed to prepare young people for public university entrance exams, the program is available to Guayaquil residents aged 16 to 30 who are high school graduates or in their third year of study. The scholarship provides 180 hours of hybrid training, including field-specific preparation, English, and Excel skills. Applications remain open until September 26, 2026.
Simultaneously, the Guayaquil Municipal Council has recognized students and faculty from the University of Guayaquil for their participation in an Evidence-Based Public Policy Contest. This partnership between the university and the Mayor’s Office involved developing proposals for the Northwest Administrative Management Area to address local needs in public works, social projects, and basic services.
