Higher education social inclusion initiatives

Overview

Higher education institutions in Mexico and Spain are implementing various social engagement and inclusion programs.

In Mexico, the University of Colima (UdeC) has launched the ‘Horizontes de Voluntad’ program, which includes the inauguration of a university classroom at the Colima Men’s Penitentiary Center to support social reintegration through arts, philosophy, and nature studies. Additionally, UdeC organized the XVII International Colloquium on Gender Equality in Higher Education Institutions to address social inequalities and violence. The Autonomous University of the State of Mexico (UAEMéx) has also introduced a ‘Decalogue of Safe and Peaceful Spaces’ to promote a culture of dialogue.

In Spain, the University of La Laguna and the Cabildo Insular in Tenerife recognized achievements in the ‘Aprendizaje-Servicio’ (Service-Learning) program, an educational methodology that integrates academic study with social commitment. Notable projects included the MANO-MAR nature and ocean project and a solidarity craft fair involving over 1,000 students.
