Himachal Pradesh teachers protest

Entities: Himachal Pradesh · Himachal Pradesh Primary Teachers Federation · Directorate of School Education · Ashish Kohli · Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu

Overview

In late July 2026, primary teachers in Himachal Pradesh staged a 15‑day foot march in Shimla and began an indefinite relay hunger strike to demand the withdrawal of the state’s newly introduced School Complex System, which groups 15‑20 schools under a single principal. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu responded by promising a decision before Teachers’ Day, withdrawing suspensions and legal actions against protesters, and pledging to keep existing powers of head teachers and block officers unchanged while promoting JBT teachers to TGT posts.

Two days later, the state Education Department formed a high‑level committee headed by Director of School Education Ashish Kohli to review the system. The committee includes senior officials and representatives of teachers’ organisations such as the Himachal Pradesh Primary Teachers Federation. Despite the committee’s creation, the federation’s relay hunger strike continued, with teachers insisting the strike would persist until the notification introducing the complex system is formally withdrawn.
