HNK Zagreb European theatre cooperation initiative

Overview

The Croatian National Theatre (HNK) in Zagreb has launched the ‘HNK2EU’ cycle, an initiative designed to showcase European theatrical productions and establish Zagreb as a center for dramatic creativity.

The cycle is set to begin on September 4 with a production of George Bernard Shaw’s ‘Man and Superman’, directed by John Malkovich and performed by the Ivan Vazov National Theatre from Sofia, Bulgaria. Upcoming participants in the 2026/2027 season include the Berliner Ensemble, the Slovenian Youth Theatre from Ljubljana, and the Slovenian National Theatre Nova Gorica.

Further developments include an international co-production with several Slovenian theatres based on a Rainer Werner Fassbinder television series, scheduled for premiere in February 2027. Additionally, the fourth Zagreb Opera Festival will be held from September 11 to 20, 2026, featuring various European ensembles such as the Polish Royal Opera and the French Compagnie Minute Papillon.
