Ho Chi Minh City flood mitigation projects

On 27 July 2026 Ho Chi Minh City’s People’s Committee approved a VND 7,150 billion (about US$310 million) programme to build nine flood‑mitigation projects, including drainage upgrades, riverbank reinforcements and pump stations, targeting low‑lying streets such as Phan Văn Hớn and Bình Quới. The same announcement listed 590 alleys in Phường Tân Phú, 346 in Cầu Kiệu and many others where fire‑trucks cannot reach, prompting inspections and upgrades to water‑access infrastructure.

A day later the city expanded the effort, allocating an additional VND 228 billion from its Disaster Prevention Fund for 89 flood‑control and landslide‑mitigation structures across 21 wards and communes. These works aim to protect more than 10,000 households and about 9,100 ha of land from tidal surges and erosion, with the city overseeing implementation and financial settlement. The report also noted a separate road‑expansion project in Bac Ninh province that was delayed, but the primary focus remained on scaling up Ho Chi Minh City’s flood‑risk reduction measures.
