Ho Chi Minh City infrastructure development
Overview
Infrastructure development in Ho Chi Minh City is expanding through several major transport and logistics projects. Initial efforts focused on the Can Gio Bridge and the Ben Thanh - Can Gio railway. The bridge project, managed by Masterise Can Gio Infrastructure Joint Stock Company, is undergoing technical design refinements and feasibility appraisals. Meanwhile, foundation work for the Ben Thanh - Can Gio railway has begun, with drilling equipment deployed to the Soai Rap River for the 54km line.
Further development is centered on the Can Gio International Transshipment Port, a nearly $5 billion project scheduled to begin construction in October 2026. The investment consortium for this 571-hectare project includes Vietnam Maritime Corporation (VIMC), Saigon Port Joint Stock Company, and Terminal Investment Limited Holding, a member of the MSC group. Once fully developed, the port is designed to handle ultra-large container ships of 250,000 tons or more, with a long-term capacity target of 16.9 million TEUs by 2047.
To support this port, authorities are planning a 3 km connecting road from Phuoc An and researching railway connections to the Cai Mep - Can Gio port cluster. Additionally, proposals include dredging the Cai Mep - Thi Vai waterway to depths of 16-18 meters to accommodate large container ships.
