Ho Chi Minh City smart transport infrastructure development

Ho Chi Minh City is advancing its urban mobility through the implementation of smart infrastructure and technology integration.

In July 2026, the city piloted a new generation of smart bus shelters on Pasteur Street. These compact units feature real-time LCD route displays, LED lighting, CCTV cameras, and USB/Type-C charging ports. The pilot follows a free-fare policy for 134 bus routes that has seen a 38% increase in rides compared to the previous year.

Building on these physical upgrades, the city has announced plans to integrate Internet of Things (IoT) sensor systems and intelligent surveillance into broader transport infrastructure. This initiative, led by the Department of Construction and supported by the Department of Science and Technology, aims to improve traffic management, security, and the detection of violations using AI and Big Data. Funding for these technological advancements is expected to be explored through public-private partnerships and external aid, with the Municipal Police coordinating data sharing to maintain public order and cybersecurity.
