Honduran legislative activity and decentralization

In the first half of 2026, the National Congress of Honduras experienced a rise in legislative activity and deputy attendance. According to a report by the Association for a More Just Society (ASJ), the Congress presented 926 bill projects between January 25 and June 30, with 140 approved. While the infrastructure and transport sector saw the highest number of approved projects, the ASJ noted that these advancements have not yet addressed the country’s primary structural problems, suggesting that performance should be measured by the quality and impact of decisions rather than quantity.

Following this period of increased activity, the National Congress moved to decentralize its operations by inaugurating its first regional office in San Pedro Sula. Located in the Universidad neighborhood, the office is intended to reduce the need for citizens, mayors, and business leaders in the Cortés department to travel to Tegucigalpa. The facility hosts representatives from the National, Liberal, Pinu-SD, and Libre parties to address regional demands concerning security, health, employment, infrastructure, and land legalization. Legislative leaders also announced plans to hold periodic sessions within the Cortés department to increase the legislative presence in the northern region.
