Honduran police anti-extortion operations

Overview

The Anti-Extortion and Terrorist Associations Division (DAET) of the Honduran National Police has intensified efforts to combat extortion and organized crime through both prevention and enforcement.

In August, the DAET implemented the ‘Comercio Seguro’ (Safe Commerce) strategy in Choluteca, providing advisory services to small and medium-sized enterprises to protect their data. Security measures also expanded to the transportation sector via saturation patrols and to secondary schools through training sessions designed to prevent gang recruitment and drug consumption.

By late August, the division reported 224 arrests during its first two months of operation. Director Daniel Molina stated that these detentions resulted from specialized intelligence work aimed at dismantling criminal structures. To improve outcomes, the unit has undergone internal reorganization to focus on high-incidence extortion areas and to strengthen the quality of investigative files for judicial proceedings. The division is currently operating with approximately 400 officers.
