Houston Astros player health and performance updates
Overview
Houston Astros shortstop Carlos Correa continues to advance his rehabilitation following surgery to repair a torn peroneus brevis tendon in his left ankle. After beginning field workouts ahead of the expected six-to-eight-month recovery window, Correa has progressed from dry swings to hitting off a tee. Manager Joe Espada recently announced that Correa is expected to return to action at some point in September, which would be nearly two months ahead of the initial recovery projection. Before returning to the major league roster, Correa must participate in multiple minor-league rehabilitation games. He has recently resumed fielding ground balls, sprinting at near-full effort, and participating in batting practice.
Following a four-month medical checkup, Correa has been cleared to intensify his training and is scheduled to travel to the team’s spring training facility in West Palm Beach, Florida. He has resumed hitting off machines and fielding ground balls at third base, reporting that he is currently running at 95 percent capacity. The upcoming phase in Florida is expected to serve as a “real test,” involving live pitching and increased baserunning. Manager Espada indicated that if Correa returns this season, he will likely occupy the starting third base position. His return may occur during the final weeks of the regular season or for a playoff series, depending on his progress.
Alongside Correa’s recovery, second baseman Jose Altuve has experienced a dramatic offensive resurgence in August. After a slump where he hit just .196 between late June and late July, Altuve posted a .450 average and a 1.100 OPS over his first five games of August. Manager Joe Espada attributed this turnaround to technical adjustments, including lowering his hands and improving his footwork to increase efficiency at the plate.
