Houthi targeting of Yemeni officials and legal professionals
Overview
Houthi rebels and militia members have increasingly targeted government officials and legal professionals in Yemen. In Al Hudaydah Province, Governor Luhayb Ali Luhayb survived a shelling attack on his office in the Al Hokho district.
In the Amran governorate, the Yemeni Lawyers Syndicate reported an attempted assassination of lawyer Bassam Saleh Ahmed Saad Al-Qahali, alleging the gunfire was linked to his professional legal activities.
More recently in Sanaa, lawyer Mustafa Mujahid Qasim Al-Othmani was reportedly assaulted and insulted by Houthi militia security personnel inside the Attorney General’s office. The Yemeni Bar Association and the ‘Lawyers Against Corruption’ network condemned the assault, stating it undermines the independence of the legal profession and the rule of law.
