Hradec Králové urban space management

Discussions regarding the management and aesthetics of Velké náměstí in Hradec Králové have centered on temporary installations and urban upgrades.

Initial debates focused on a historical Secession-style well currently encased in a wooden structure titled ‘Corral’, a temporary art installation by the Gallery of Modern Art. Opposition representative Ivan Picek criticized the city council for not designating the well as a cultural monument, suggesting such a status would allow for repair subsidies. Picek highlighted a perceived contradiction in spending 30 million CZK on a new fountain while the existing one remains obscured.

Following this, the city invested approximately 1.9 million CZK in temporary modifications to the square, including mobile greenery containers, wooden platforms, and furniture to create leisure areas. While residents criticized the use of potted trees over permanent planting, the administration stated that direct planting is impractical until a comprehensive reconstruction of the square is completed. This future reconstruction is expected to include the planting of 40 permanent trees.
