Hrvatske ceste corruption and bribery case
Overview
The Croatian anti-corruption agency, USKOK, initiated legal action against Josip Škorić, the former chairman of the board of Hrvatske ceste. The indictment alleged that between June 2022 and May 2024, Škorić accepted bribes from business leaders to facilitate public procurement processes for road construction works.
Following the indictment, Škorić reached a plea agreement with USKOK regarding a bribery scandal involving the company Chemosignal. He was sentenced to 11 months in prison, a sentence commuted to community service, and ordered to pay a 15,000 euro fine and forfeit 6,000 euros in illicit gains. He waived his right to appeal, making the verdict final.
Other participants in the procurement fraud case also reached settlements. These included Silvijo Čamber, a former director at HAC, who received 11 months of community service and a 17,500 euro fine; Anđelko Ščukanec, who received a one-year suspended prison sentence and an 85,000 euro fine; and Darko Babić, who received a 10-month suspended sentence. The company Chemosignal pleaded guilty and was fined 10,000 euros.
