Human rights advocacy for Asian minorities in Geneva

Overview

During the 63rd Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, various efforts were made to highlight human rights concerns regarding Asian minority groups.

In late August, Tibetan representatives conducted a diplomatic campaign, meeting with officials from over 32 countries and the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. Their discussions focused on religious freedom, cultural rights, and environmental issues, specifically citing the death of activist Lobga Rangzen and the potential impact of China’s Law on Promoting Ethnic Unity and Progress on Tibetan identity.

Following this, the Global Human Rights Defence (GHRD) launched an exhibition at the Palais des Nations titled ‘The Struggle for Minority Rights in Asia’. The exhibition utilized survivor testimonies and documentation to address systemic discrimination and religious restrictions affecting several communities, including the Uyghur and Falun Gong in China, as well as various groups in Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh.
