Human trafficking and cybercrime in Ghana

Overview

Authorities in Ghana have conducted operations targeting human trafficking and organized cybercrime. In mid-October, the Cyber Security Authority, in collaboration with international partners from Nigeria, the United Kingdom, and the United States, executed ‘Operation Cyberhunt’. This intelligence-led mission targeted suspected cybercrime compounds where 120 Nigerian nationals were allegedly trafficked and forced into cybercrime operations. During this operation, officials seized numerous electronic devices, vehicles, and passports, repatriating the rescued individuals to Nigeria while processing eight others for prosecution.

Following this, the Ghana Immigration Service arrested a Nigerian national in the Savannah Region for alleged human trafficking. The suspect reportedly lured a victim with false promises of employment, transporting her through Togo and Benin before forcing her into sex work in an illegal mining community. Officials identified the area as a hub for criminal activities involving foreign nationals and are continuing efforts to locate accomplices who fled the scene.
