Hungarian civil society funding transparency initiative

The Hungarian Prime Minister’s Office released an interactive map to provide transparency regarding approximately 400 billion forints in state civil support funding distributed between 2022 and 2026. The initiative follows reports suggesting funds may have been disproportionately allocated to organizations with ties to former governing parties, including some entities with short histories or unverifiable community activity.

The platform tracks funding from various central budget sources, such as the Urban Civil Fund, the Rural Civil Fund, the National Cooperation Fund, and the National Cultural Fund. It allows users to search data by year, funding source, and electoral district for nearly 20,000 organizations.

While the government aims to distinguish genuine community work from political interests, the launch has drawn criticism from those who argue the map may stigmatize certain groups, including small-scale entities such as school foundations and animal welfare associations. Specific data highlighted from the platform shows that 295 hunting-related entities received roughly 1.14 billion forints, including the Koronás-bika Vadásztársaság, which received nearly 40 million forints in annual installments.
