Social protection spending as a percentage of GDP declined from 17.3 percent in 2010 to 12.3 percent in 2024, leaving Hungary trailing only Malta and Ireland in the EU. This trend is linked to rising elderly poverty, with relative income poverty for those over 65 increasing from 4.9 percent in 2010 to 13.8 percent in 2024.

Regarding fiscal policy, Finance Minister András Kármán announced a shift toward a supplementary budget to increase transparency, projecting a higher deficit target of 7.5 percent of GDP, up from 3.7 percent. Additionally, Fidesz MP János Bóka raised concerns that EU funds might benefit foreign companies over domestic ones.
