Hungarian football heatwave schedule adjustments
Entities: NB I (Hungarian top football league) · Magyar Labdarúgó Szövetség (MLSZ) · Magyar Labdarúgó Szövetség · Hungarian Football Federation · Hungary
Overview
In late July 2026 the Hungarian Football Federation (MLSZ) announced a plan to limit electricity use during an extreme heatwave by requiring all NB I, NB II and NB III matches to start no later than 17:30 from 1 August, with any unshiftable fixtures postponed. Clubs were urged to provide additional water stations and free drinking water for spectators.
A few days later MLSZ confirmed that the third and fourth rounds of the national leagues would be moved to a 17:30 kickoff, applying the rule across the first, second and third divisions while continuing to monitor weather and power‑grid strain.
On 3 August MLSZ reiterated the 17:30 start time for the third and fourth round and said a decision on postponing the upcoming weekend matches was still pending, promising updates on its website. The federation’s focus remained on avoiding floodlight use amid the heat.
At the same time, Ferencváros struggled domestically, remaining winless after two NB I games, while four UEFA cup ties scheduled in Hungary still required stadium lighting. Fans and former national‑team player Péter Szakály criticised the continued play under extreme heat conditions.
