Hungarian government official luxury travel spending

Public records and official disclosures have revealed high levels of luxury spending by Hungarian government officials during international travel.

Data obtained through public interest requests regarding former Minister of National Economy Márton Nagy shows that over a three-year period, Nagy visited 51 cities across 32 countries. His accommodation costs averaged approximately 451,000 forints per night, with stays at high-end hotels such as the Four Seasons, Ritz-Carlton, and Waldorf Astoria. Reports noted instances where officials stayed in luxury resorts or castle hotels located far from official meeting sites, such as in Jeju Island, South Korea, or Antwerp, Belgium. Expenditures also reportedly included the use of private jets.

Separately, the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs released details concerning a summer 2024 trip by Péter Szijjártó. The delegation utilized a Gulfstream G-V luxury jet for a trip spanning Chile, the United States, and Turkey, with total flight rental costs amounting to 257 million HUF. Additional accommodation expenses for this trip totaled approximately 5 million HUF, including stays at the Sheraton Santiago Hotel, Hilton Garden Inn in New York, and the Istanbul Bomonti Hotel.
